Keeping children safe: allergy awareness and Benedict’s Law

Benedict’s Law is named in memory of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died following an allergic reaction at school. His family’s campaigning has helped bring greater attention to allergy safety in schools. (benedictblythe.com, gov.uk)

At St Mary Magdalen’s, we want every child to feel safe and included. We have reviewed how food is brought into school for birthdays and cake sales.

Birthday treats

Children may bring in cakes, sweets or other treats to share for their birthday. These must be shop bought, in their original packaging and have a full ingredients and allergen label. Please hand them to a member of staff so the label can be checked before they are shared.

Cake sales

Cake sales will continue, but all cakes and other food donated for sale must be shop bought, in their original packaging and have a full ingredients and allergen label. We cannot accept homemade items for cake sales or birthday treats.

Staff will follow the allergy information we hold for individual children when sharing food. Please tell the school office if your child has a new allergy or their allergy information has changed.
