Welcome to Year 1.

Our class teacher is Mr Walne and our teaching assistants are Mrs Morgan and Mrs Crawshaw.

Autumn 2

Welcome back to our Autumn 2 half term. We hope you all had a fantastic break and had lots of fun over the half term holidays.

During our seven weeks, we will be enjoying some really exciting learning.  There will be a heavy focus on phonics still, ensuring that all children are becoming more and more secure with their sounds within phase 2,3 and 4, therefore improving their reading and writing.

Please have a look at 'The Curriculum Overview' below (file to download) to learn all about the exciting new things we will be learning about this half term.

There is also a homework grid that we would like you to look at and complete this half term. If you would like any help with any of these activities  then please let us know.

Please be assured that as a school we are following the most up to date guidelines with your child's safety being one of our highest priorities.

If there is anything at all I can help with and support you with, please do not hesitate to contact me at adam.walne@st-marymagdalens.lancs.sch.uk.

Tapestry

The Year 1 team are very excited about our learning platform 'Tapestry'.

'Tapestry' is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Year 1 curriculum, to build up a record of your child's experiences during their time with us. It is also an extemely effecitve platform to help us support both yourself and your child's learning at home.

Please continue to check Tapestry regularly to see all of the hard work your children have been getting up to throughout the day.

Thank you.

Homework

Every half term Year 1 will receive a homework grid. There are a variety of activities to have a go at on the grid. All sheets or information required to complete the homework will be available to download on the same document. We understand that family life is busy, therefore, it is not essential that all of these activities are completed but we do ask that your child aims to complete some of the activities to reinforce their learning across the curriculum.

Reading and Spellings

Reading at home is incredibly valuable, children who read frequently at home are more likely to obtain the necessary progress required in Year 1. If possible, we would suggest that you read with your child for 10 minutes each night as this is far more effective than trying to encourage them to read at length after a tiring day at school.

Your child's reading book will be changed twice a week (Tuesday and Friday). Please read each book with your child and then encourage them to have a go at reading independently. Talking about the story with them and asking questions to develop comprehension skills can be extremely impactful in enhancing their English ability.

Spellings will be handed out every Tuesday for a spelling test the following Tuesday. It is extremely important that your child works hard to practise their spellings at home to ensure a good result in their spelling test.

Bug Club

Please continue to use and check Bug Club regularly as stories appropriate to your child's ability will be allocated. These online story books will help your child meet their reading target, aiding them in improving their reading ability. If there is any issues with logging on to Bug Club, please contact me on the above email so that I can solve the problem. Remember Bug club has other phonics games as well as other ebooks that your child can read. If you need any help logging in then please let us know.

PE

Year 1 have a PE lesson every Thursday morning.

Please ensure that your child has a full labelled PE kit and they are wearing this to school.

Cool Milk

If you would like your child to have milk, you will need to register them on the cool milk website and pay the required termly fee.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Walne.
